The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the description of engineering semi-popularization articles written in English, particularly in relation to cohesion, and morespecifically to the phenomenon of encapsulation as realised by the pronoun this insentence-initial position. The study is based on genre analysis theory, scientificcommunication, literature on cohesion in English, and corpus linguistics methodology. Acorpus of 130 engineering semi-popularization articles was built for this thesis. Fourstages were followed to carry out the study: first approach to the corpus, identification ofcases to analyse, quantitative and qualitative syntactic and semantic analysis of the textualsegments encapsulated by the pronoun this in sentence-initial position, and interpretationof results and conclusions. The results from the first two stages of analysis revealed thatthis had a high frequency in the corpus of engineering semi-popularization articles, themajority of the cases being used as encapsulating cohesive pronouns in sentence-initialposition. The syntactic analysis of the encapsulated textual segments showed that thesentence was the most frequent structure condensed by the demonstrative pronoun this The semantic analysis of the textual segments revealed that there was a markedpredominance of fragments Describing objects and systems and Explaining the actionscarried out for the development of designs and innovations, both categories directlyconnected to the discipline, engineering, and the genre, the semi-popularization article Taken together, these findings provide evidence for the description and understanding ofengineering semi-popularization articles in English and shed light on the cohesivephenomenon of encapsulation to inform pedagogic practices in engineeringundergraduate ESP reading courses.
